Word Association is a free word association game for remote teams. Players need no account and there's nothing to install — share the room link or code and everyone joins in their browser. Each person sees only the previous word and adds their own, then the full chain is revealed to show where the team's thinking wandered, all beside your Zoom, Meet, or Teams call.

How it works

Build a chain of associated words to spark creativity and reveal how your team connects ideas.

Why this works

Seeing only the last word strips out the pressure to be clever about the whole chain. You just react. The full reveal at the end shows how the team's collective thinking wandered from one concept to another in a few steps, which turns out to say more about how people connect ideas than the setup suggests.

What facilitators say

It's the fastest icebreaker we ship. One word per person, no prep, ten seconds of explanation. That makes it the right fit for meetings where the warm-up can't run long.

Where it lands

Who it's for

  • Remote standup openers
  • Small teams needing a 2-minute warm-up with no setup
  • Teams that find traditional icebreakers too structured
  • Async-friendly teams who want a low-pressure activity

Best for

  • 2-minute remote standup opener before the daily check-in
  • Team meeting warm-up for a group that dislikes formal icebreakers
  • Team meeting opener for a group of 3-8 before a working session
  • End-of-meeting closer for a small team

When not to use this game

Not well-suited to groups bigger than 10. The chain gets too long for the reveal to feel punchy, and people disengage waiting for their turn. For larger groups, a simultaneous format like This or That is a better fit.

You'll see one word on screen. Type the first word that comes to mind when you read it. No overthinking. We'll see the full chain at the end.

Common questions

Is Word Association free to play?
Yes. Word Association is free to play in the browser. Only the facilitator who creates the room signs in; everyone they invite plays for free with no per-player cost. It's a no-budget two-minute warm-up you can drop into a standup or short team meeting.
Do players need to sign up or download anything?
No. Players join by opening the room link or typing the room code in any browser — no account and no install. The host opens the room and shares the link, and everyone adds their word straight away. Since each turn is a single word, it's about the lowest-effort game here for participants.
How many people can play Word Association?
It works best with 3 to 10 players. You want at least three for the chain to take a few unexpected jumps, and it stays punchy up to about ten. Beyond that the chain runs long and people disengage waiting for their turn, so for larger groups a simultaneous game like This or That fits better.
Can we play Word Association on Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams?
Yes. It runs in a browser tab next to your video call. Keep Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams open so the final chain reveal can get a reaction, share the room link in the meeting chat, and play in the tab. It doesn't integrate with the meeting platform, so it works the same on all three.
How do you play Word Association?
A random seed word kicks off the chain. Players take turns adding one word each, but you only see the word immediately before yours — not the whole chain. The chain grows one word at a time until everyone has contributed, then the full sequence is revealed so the group can see how its collective thinking wandered.
