A one-word collaborative story game.
A free one word story game for remote teams, no signup for players. Share a link and everyone adds one word at a time to build a shared, surprising story over Zoom, Meet, or Teams.
Only the facilitator signs in. Participants just join.
Story Builder is a free one-word collaborative story game for remote teams. Players need no account and there's nothing to install — share the room link or code and everyone joins in their browser. Each person adds a single word at a time to build a shared, surprising story that's read back at the end, all beside your Zoom, Meet, or Teams call.
How it works
Take turns adding words to build a story, then reveal an AI-generated synopsis of your team's script.
Why this works
A one-word turn is the smallest possible contribution. No one can hide and no one can dominate. The story drifts wherever the team takes it, and the final read-back is a compact artifact of how this exact group thinks when their ideas are stitched together.
What facilitators say
Everyone contributes and the story belongs to no one, so quieter people aren't bulldozed by the louder voices that usually shape group output.
Where it lands
Who it's for
- Creative and content teams at workshop kick-offs
- Cross-functional project teams starting a new brief
- Remote teams needing a light collaborative warm-up
- Small team offsites (3–10 people)
Best for
- 5-minute kick-off for a content or design sprint
- Creative team warm-up before a brainstorming session
- Remote team social for a team of 3–10
- Offsite opener on day one for a new project team
When not to use this game
Because each player only sees the last few words, the result can come out incoherent or off-brand if the group pushes it in awkward directions. For senior leadership groups or client-facing sessions, pick a more structured warm-up.
Facilitator script
We're building a story one word at a time. You'll see the last few words and add one more. Don't overthink it. React to what's in front of you.

Common questions
- Is Story Builder free to play?
- Yes. Story Builder is free to play in the browser. Only the facilitator who opens the room signs in; everyone they invite plays for free with no per-player cost. It's a no-budget five-minute collaborative warm-up for a creative or content team.
- Do players need to sign up or download anything?
- No. Players join by opening the room link or typing the room code in any browser — no account and no install. The host opens the room and shares the link, and everyone adds their word straight away. Since each turn is just one word, there's nothing for participants to learn or set up.
- How many people can play Story Builder?
- It works best with 3 to 10 players. You want at least three so the story takes a few unexpected turns, and it stays coherent up to about ten. Beyond that the wait between turns grows and the story can wander too far, so for larger groups it's better to run a couple of parallel rooms.
- Can we play Story Builder on Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams?
- Yes. It runs in a browser tab next to your video call. Keep Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams open so the final read-back lands with the group, share the room link in the meeting chat, and play in the tab. It doesn't integrate with the meeting platform, so it works the same on all three.
- How do you play Story Builder?
- The game starts from a seed word. Players take turns adding a single word each, but you only see the most recent words in the chain — not the whole story. The story grows word by word as it passes around, and when the round ends the complete story is read back to the group along with an AI-generated synopsis.
