A Slack icebreaker that isn't Donut

Donut runs an async program of pairings and daily questions. This is the live, in-meeting alternative for teams whose Donut engagement chart has been falling for months.

What Donut does well

Random coffee pairings are a real product idea, and for the first month a Donut rollout works. New hires meet senior people they would never otherwise message, distributed teams get to know names, and the fact that it runs without anyone organizing it is the whole point.

Where workplace teams hit the wall

The complaint is fatigue. "Slack remove weekly icebreaker" autocompletes on Google, which is uninstall intent, not a feature request. r/Slack threads describe the daily-question DM as the message everyone mutes by month three. Async icebreakers ask people to share something personal in a channel during focus time, and the response rate falls accordingly. The product still runs, the engagement does not.

What we built differently

Live, not async. The team plays together for five minutes during a meeting they were going to be in anyway, then everyone gets back to work. No daily DMs, no channel that needs moderating, nothing to mute. Drop the link in the team channel when you want to play, close the tab when the meeting ends.

Common questions

Does this install in Slack?
No. There is nothing to install. The facilitator drops a link in the Slack channel and the team joins from there.
Will it post to a Slack channel automatically?
No. We do not post anything to Slack on your behalf. If you want a daily question, we are not that product. If you want a five-minute live game during your weekly team meeting, this is.
Can it replace Donut's coffee pairings?
Not directly. We do not do random pairings. We do live group games that 4 to 16 people play together. Different shape of product, addressing the same Donut-fatigue problem from the live side.
Is there a per-seat cost?
No. Free for the facilitator, free for participants, no per-seat or per-channel fee.
